Over the past few months, our team has been hard at work growing our impact in the community, both literally and figuratively.
Scientific Progress
We successfully ran our first round of almost 300 soil tests across multiple gardens, helping local growers better understand the health and composition of their soil. Each test resulted in a detailed soil report, along with our personal recommendations of ways to address deficiencies. Healthy soil is the cornerstone of sustainable gardening, and we're proud to help our community build stronger gardens from the ground up. We plan to take what we learned and expand our testing in our second round with improved techniques, plotting tests across multiple gardens to understand the soil trends in Atlanta.

Volunteer Work
We are also proud to have organized volunteer workdays in Stone Mountain and Smyrna, bringing together our community and spreading awareness of food insecurity in our city of Atlanta. According to Feeding America, roughly 1 in 6 people in Georgia face food insecurity — a reminder of why this work matters. Volunteers helped with winterizing gardens, pulling weeds, mulching, and more. We hope to continue these workdays that help involve the youth in uplifting communities and initiating change. Reach out to join us in our next workday!

Composting
Rooted in Solutions is also proud to announce the start of our new composting initiative as well as a partnership with CompostNow. Together, we're exploring ways to divert food waste from our community's restaurants, grocery stores, and numerous shops while turning them into something valuable to fight food insecurity. The EPA estimates that food is the single largest category of material sent to U.S. landfills — composting is one of the most effective ways to close that loop in local food systems, and we're excited to implement this into our community. You can help support us by directing your compost to us through CompostNow's garden partner program!
