Nicholas House Garden
In May 2026, Rooted in Solutions partnered with Nicholas House to establish a 150-square-foot garden serving the needs of residents and the surrounding community. The garden currently grows tomatoes, yellow squash, zucchini, bell peppers, sweet potatoes, watermelon, and basil, providing Nicholas House residents with access to fresh, nutritious produce.
Sustainability
The Nicholas House garden is maintained independently through a team of student volunteers, who engage the community in weekly activities such as trimming, watering, and harvesting for others. We also practice seed saving to preserve our favorite crops season after season, and use organic amendments like compost to help close the food loop.
Innovation & Research
Rooted in Solutions is implementing evidence-based scientific techniques to enhance crop production and establish a model for sustainable agriculture. We are testing several key advancements, including mycorrhizal fungi networks to strengthen soil health, seed inoculation with growth-promoting bacteria to boost early plant vigor, and alternative soil amendments such as larval frass, benchmarked against traditional fertilizers. By integrating these methods, our garden serves as both a learning hub and a catalyst for community impact.
